Those of you who are parents will know that children can (and will) take you to the extremes of the emotional spectrum: you’ll feel overwhelming love, tenderness, and connection but probably also have moments of intense annoyance, anger, worry, disgust, disappointment or even hatred.
Children often bring out sides in us previously unexplored: the nurturing side, the protective side, the playful side, the authoritative side, the disciplinarian. Some of these aspects of ourselves we cherish and others we could do without.
This week my husband and I have been laughing about this quote from the novelist Fay Weldon: “The greatest advantage of not having children must be that you can go on believing that you are a nice person. Once you have children, you understand how wars start.”
