Reclaim Christmas!!

I have been out over the last few days to do a bit of Christmas shopping. We generally try to keep it at a minimum at our place – a zen Christmas if you like – but I wanted to get a few small things for the kids and something for a couple of friends who are going through a hard time. I was struck by how tired most people looked and some even looked downright haunted!

Over the last few weeks I have also heard stories in our sessions together about how overwhelmed many of you feel: there are too many things to do and the financial strain can be significant. I’m blown away by how much some of you are spending! Is it really necessary to put yourself under so much pressure?

On the radio the other day, I heard an ad that said: What do you get someone who has everything? Well here’s a thought: how about nothing? Or a hug? Or a card telling them what you like about them? If we really don’t need anything (which I think is the case for many of us) why spend time, money and energy trying to purchase something that isn’t needed?? It feels like consumerism gone mad.

Let’s pause for a moment and take a deep breath and think about what Christmas ideally should be about (whether you’re religious or not): spending time with friends and family, good food, laughter, fun and relaxation.  A time to be with the loved ones that are still with us and remember the ones that have passed.

So take a moment to reflect on what would constitute a good Christmas for you and your family. Forget how you think it should be or how you believe that everyone else is doing it. Do what’s right for you.

Thank you all for another year filled with tears and laughter, insights and oversights, understanding and denial, puzzlement and clarity. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (if you manage your stress this really is a great time of year)
