{"id":576,"date":"2014-08-24T06:27:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-24T06:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/clinicalpsychology.net.au\/?p=576"},"modified":"2014-08-24T06:33:04","modified_gmt":"2014-08-24T06:33:04","slug":"mindfulness-and-cognitive-therapy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clinicalpsychology.net.au\/?p=576","title":{"rendered":"Mindfulness and Cognitive Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A number of you have \u2013 very sensibly \u2013 asked me what exactly is the difference between Cognitive Therapy and mindfulness. In cognitive therapy we change our negative or anxious thinking pattens by:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Identifying<\/strong> the unhelpful thought causing negative feelings <\/li>\n<li><strong>Challenging <\/strong>the thought, which means evaluating whether the thought is      realistic (i.e. based on facts and evidence) <\/li>\n<li><strong>Substituting<\/strong> the old, unhelpful thought with a new \u2013 and reality based \u2013      thought<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Many of you will be familiar with this cognitive model from our sessions together<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to cognitive therapy, which is an active process of changing the thoughts that make us feel bad, mindfulness is about becoming aware of the thoughts and feelings (c.f. step 1), but we don\u2019t do anything to alter the thoughts or feelings.<\/p>\n<p>Mindfulness, according to Germer, Segal and Fulton, involves being: <em>\u201caware of present experience with acceptance<\/em>\u201d. This means that we watch thoughts and feeling arise, hang around for a while and then disappear. The picture that is sometimes used to describe mindful awareness is that it is like watching a stream where the thoughts are leaves that we allow to flow by.
