{"id":521,"date":"2013-07-05T22:22:06","date_gmt":"2013-07-05T22:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/clinicalpsychology.net.au\/?p=521"},"modified":"2013-07-05T22:27:33","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T22:27:33","slug":"the-unexamined-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clinicalpsychology.net.au\/?p=521","title":{"rendered":"The unexamined life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Psychotherapists are fond of quoting Socrates: <strong><em>\u201cThe unexamined life is not worth living\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not surprising as most of us go into this field because we are analytical and introspective with an interest in existential concerns.<\/p>\n<p>There is probably also a pragmatic reason why we like this quote \u2013 examining people\u2019s lives is our bread and butter.<\/p>\n<p>But mainly I think that we like Socrates\u2019 quote because we understand that self-reflection and examination can lead to better mental health as well as the strengthening of important human qualities such as kindness, empathy, compassion, and caring.<\/p>\n<p>Clinical psychologist Ronald Siegel suggested that: \u201c <strong><em>Prescription labels neglect to list: \u201cmay lead to an unexamined life\u201d among possible side effects\u201d. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Psychotherapists are fond of quoting Socrates: \u201cThe unexamined life is not worth living\u201d.
